Artist Statement

I am Sagar Sarkar from Bangladesh  and are since recently studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. I have completed my BFA from department of painting, University of Dhaka. I  paint and work based on object-orientation using new media. At the beginning of my art practice, I was influenced by Kafka’s magic realism and Jackson Pollock where I was attracted by the concept of space and time. I am also motivated by Pollock’s expression with feelings rather than illustration.

When I paint, I don’t think too much, just help myself for “go with the flow”. My paintings release me from inner torment and painting hours work as a meditation. My paintings reflect my consciousness and subconscious behavior. According to Hindu scripture (Bhagavad Gita): ‘The power of God is with you at all times; through the activities of mind, senses, breathing, and emotions; and is constantly doing all the work using you as a mere instrument’. In my paintings surfaces overlap and create and  finally generate a composite image. The process of my painting is the sum of several decisions and is the result of many overservations in  time and space. I transform my thoughts into painting. I usually work with oil pastel and acrylic on canvas in a large scale and paint minimalistic patterns and formations. I also work with digital media both still image and motion image. My work process is strongly guided by the idea of transformation and metamorphosis.

I have found rare concepts from Shakespeare which are sometimes similar with the concepts of Hindu scripture which lead me to think about life style. I observe that the world is a stage and people are the actors of Shakespeare´s stage plays. Now I am at the stage of understanding people and previous historic events, but I just observe and  never take that as a final decision.
