Utopia Planitia is a vast plain in the northern hemisphere of Mars, with a diameter of around 3,300 km.

Utopia Planitia literally means "the plain of nowhere" (after Thomas More's wordplay: Greek "ou" = not, "topos" = place). For science, it is a topography of ice and sediment; for science fiction, the birthplace of visionary starships.

"I try to find such a plain within the sediments of painterly processes; it must still remain a non-place, rushing past like a series of numbers, letters, or the landscape outside a train window. It does not come to rest until the gaze catches, crosses the horizons, and puts a halt to the frenzy."

Matthias Buch *1979 studied painting at the University of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. Various exhibitions in Austria and abroad.
